“Come by,” my friend Michele texted. “I have a surprise for you.”
Now who could resist an invitation like that?
As soon as I knocked, she opened the door with a huge smile on her face. “Come in. Come in.”
I stepped across the threshold, and she waved me toward the dining table. “I went to the farmer’s market this morning. The French bakery stand had those cinnamon rolls you like. I got the last one!”
Her kindness bowled me over. I accepted the little paper sack as though it contained the Crown Jewels. “Wow! Thank you so much.”
We chatted a few minutes before I left, but my feet really didn’t touch the ground on the way home. My friend knew what I liked and purchased a simple gift. She went out of her way to ensure its safe arrival in my hands just because she wanted to do something nice for me.
Though I meant to savor the buttery confection for breakfast the next day, I couldn’t wait that long. I warmed it for dinner and had it with a cold glass of milk. Kindness sure tastes sweet. Is there some small gesture you can do for someone today to let them know they are special to you?
“Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10 NIV). .
