Commitment to Labor
My old house required repairs. I was grateful to have skilled workmen assist with stucco, dry wall, paint, plumbing, electrical wiring and window replacement. Each tradesperson utilized a special talent to ensure the structure would be safe. I marveled at their strength and daily commitment to hard labor.
They didn’t complain or pout. They methodically organized chores and hammered, chiseled, or drilled until the construction was completed. No one asked for privileges. Each assessed what needed to be done and how best to accomplish goals.
Watching many labor on my behalf humbled me. Was I willing to work as hard as they did?
In the Bible, Paul advised elders in Ephesus how to build God’s church family. “I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing,” Paul said. “You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions” (Acts 20:33-34 NIV).
Paul’s leadership commanded respect, not because of elite education or social status, but due to his hands-on engagement and willingness to finish necessary jobs.
As we go forth in this new year, let’s look for places where we can work and bring God glory.
Today’s prayer:
Please help us embrace hard work and help the weak. Amen.
