Some people saw a muddy sinkhole and walked away. But George Turner Sr., who perceived potential for a lush garden, purchased the four acres in 1911. More than a century later, Turner’s vision draws tourists to a living museum of botanical delights in the Sunken Gardens of St. Petersburg, Florida.
Visitors ramble along delightful trails to explore tropical beauty. Each turn of the path reveals a new surprise that has been lovingly tended. Palms, succulents, ferns, and orchids grace shady lanes that invite admiration and rest.
A tour highlight is where bright pink Chilean flamingos, which have an average lifespan of 40 years, parade and preen around a pond.
