Building legacies to last

Building legacies to last

Saw this ornate castle on a recent beach walk. I admired the attention to detail with shell gates, tall turrets, and algae wall. Someone invested a lot of time and care in this beautiful design.

Despite great creativity, the sculpture had a flaw: the foundation wasn’t firm. The ocean’s tide rolled closer and closer toward the miniature fort, and not even the deep moat could stop the water’s approach.

How often do we invest energy in efforts that won’t have lasting results?

There’s the purchase we absolutely had to have, only to realize even before payments were finished that the object no longer satisfied. And what about that outfit that we paid too much for, then only wore once because it was uncomfortable?

Focusing only on short-term objectives may be costly in the long run.

One way to test for sustainability is to align our actions with Jesus’ teachings. “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock,” Jesus said. “The rain came down, the streams rose and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock” (Luke 6:24-25 NIV).
