Are our life goal's distracting us from God's?

Musicians and movie stars are called “idols” as adoring audiences flock to follow the latest trends.

Others may rub a Buddha statue’s round tummy for good luck.

But these seemingly harmless actions may have a dark underside. Consider what the Bible says about idolatry. In this era of anything-goes-and-do-what-you-want, we often miss the Bible’s first commandment: Put nothing ahead of God. Nor should we make any object to bow down to or worship.

Fascinations with job titles, bank balances, property holdings and social status keep us staring at false lures. They may not be as obvious as the golden calf the Israelites worshiped in Exodus 32 after leaving Egypt, but they sure distract from the Giver of Blessings.

One protection against idolatry—worshiping anything other than God—is to offer gratitude for every circumstance. Having a job signals God’s favor so we can earn income. Leading a network is the chance to serve others and bring God glory. Physical assets are resources to fund Kingdom work.

Beware glittery distractions that draw us away from loving God. He alone bestows lasting riches of peace and contentment.

Bible verse:

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:2-3 NIV).
