Long-term Planning

We sat under the brick portico at the assisted living facility. My 96-year-old companion leaned her elbows on the walker while I rocked in a wooden chair nearby. Others formed two parallel lines along the entry. All sought a sense of freedom from the confines of being inside. Some pairs talked while others relaxed.

Across from me, an attendant had a small activity ball that she gently tossed back and forth with a resident. Each side of the ball had a conversation question. When I smiled at the ladies, they lobbed the ball over to me, and I shared it with the woman I was visiting from church.

I asked, “What is your greatest achievement?”

Without hesitating, she said, “My family.”

Almost 100 years of living and focusing on the people she loves is what takes priority.

She didn’t name career titles or list personal possessions, even though she could have.

Is the way we spend time aligning with what has lasting value?

Each day is fleeting.

What is your greatest achievement so far?

Today’s Bible verse:

“May the LORD our God be with us as he was with our ancestors; may he never leave us nor forsake us.” 1 Kings 8:57 NIV
