The economy is wobbly, and money can be tight. But that doesn’t mean you have to stress over buying presents. With imagination and love, you can make a family heirloom to be treasured.
In the picture, you see a miniature reindeer my son made for me at least 30 years ago. I had asked for a log version to go in the front yard, but my son chose instead a three-inch marvel made from sticks. Though the twig antlers got replaced with a bent paper clip, everything else has weathered multiple home moves.
The fabric Christmas tree is a project my friend Carla showed our ladies group how to make. She provided all the fabric pieces and guided assembly.
Both Carla and my son showed that time together is valuable. The memories and gift of self are what’s most treasured.
Instead of asking children to make a wish list for Santa this year, consider inviting them to fashion a gift for someone else. That’s a present of generosity they can open all year long.
