Postal carriers have the reputation of being dependable, but Darci goes way beyond that. She also brings sunshine.
Though she walks 10 miles a day on her route in all kinds of weather, she never appears rushed. She makes time to chat and gets to know folks.
A mail lady for 20 years, she loves her job. “The best part is talking with my customers.”
She knows who’s been in the hospital and whose pup swallowed a wash cloth. Darci has been known to trade recipes too.
“In the 37 years I’ve lived in this neighborhood, Darci is absolutely the best mail carrier ever,” Carolyn said. “I share plants and leave rootings for her under the mailbox. Darci even looks out for my house when I’m out of town.”
Darci’s caring has great reach. One time, she heard someone crying for help. As she rounded the corner to put letters in a mailbox, she saw a senior who’d fallen and been lying outside for several hours. Darci stayed with the woman and made sure more help arrived.
“What makes Darci special is great compassion for her customers and pets,” Max said. “My pit bull, Shelby, watches for her every day and goes nuts when she sees her. Darci pets her and even kisses her on the lips.”
Darci serves quietly to make the community a better place. “A little bit of kindness can change someone’s whole attitude,” she said. “Just a smile can turn everything around.”
